We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from Griffith Hughes’ “The Natural History of Barbados” published in 1750. This rare work contains detailed folio prints illustrated by Ehret, Mynde & others.
Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) was a botanist, entomologist and master botanical illustrator. A highly skilled and prolific artist Ehret, established himself as the pre-eminent botanical illustrator of the 18th century collaborating with such luminaries as Linnaeus. The prints offered in this selection are some of the most iconic and well known botanical prints of all time, being frequently reproduced. These prints are the authentic original antique prints, in fine condition, and hence a true treasure from our past.
These beautiful copper engravings feature recent hand coloring by our professional colorist in the U.K. original hand coloring and measure approximately 9” by 13 ½” on an excellent chain-lined paper with no deficits. The first two prints shown are on slightly toned paper, with the subsequent prints on white paper. Each print is inscribed with a heraldic crest and dedication to royalty of the day including the Princess of Wales. Of all of the prints, these palms are among the most desirable.
