first edition of Charles D’Orbigny’s Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle published in 1849 by Renard & Martinet, Paris. As keen collectors of such works, we are delighted to obtain this one, considered by many experts to be the finest and best
illustrated natural history work of the era. The superb, beautifully hand colored plates are from the leading French artists of the day such as Susemihl, Travier, Oudart and Pretre. There is no text, but the order, genus & species is on each print in Latin & French. References include Nissen ZBI, 4617; Wood 323.
The condition of these prints is excellent. Each print measures approximately 6
1/4 by 9 1/2 inches. There is little or no foxing, on beautiful heavy French paper that varies from creamy to soft white.
