Dragon Lizard (Dragon de Java), Chameleon TRR80 $55
Each print measures approximately 8
1/4
inches by 10 7/8 inches, with full margins not shown.
We are very excited to offer prints from this
extremely rare work of beautifully hand colored stipple
engravings. It is even rarer in the form in which we
present it today, the large paper copy. It derives from the
work of the luminaries of the 18th century under the
support of the king of France, Louis XV, and the later
direction of Turpin. Most of the prints are by Turpin & Pretre. First sent to the Royal Printing House of France
from 1816-1829, it was then published in Italian in 1837
by Batelli & Sons. We are offering prints from the first
French publication.
(Ref: Ceresoli)
This work is truly unique, in that it encompasses the
entire “natural world” of the title page, and includes
illustrations spanning the entire animal and plant
kingdom. Turpin was one of the greatest botanical
painters of his time. Largely self taught, he was
inspired by the botanical painter Poiteau whom he met in
Santo Domingo. Turpin was stationed there in the French
army & Poiteau was a plant collector for the Jardin des
Plantes. Turpin collaborated on many works during his
lifetime, including this monumental work of some 29
volumes. Each print measures approximately 8 1/4 inches
by 10 7/8 inches, with full margins not shown. The condition is
good, with light creamy paper and intense coloring and
some slight foxing, mostly marginal
