Sowerby Shell Prints 1852

While our images are electronically watermarked, the antique prints themselves are not.

Clam Shells SO6 $75
Each print measures approximately 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches

These prints are hand coloured plates from the 4th edition of A Conchological Manual, by G.B. Sowerby, published in 1852. The prints are in excellent condition, with vibrant hand coloring.

George Brettingham Sowerby had a life time passion for shells. In 1823 he left the employment of his father to open a shell shop, and then became active in cataloging shell collections & shell societies. James Sowerby was one of the “inner circle” in the great age of botanical illustration in England, and a central figure in many of the publications of the day. His illustrations are found in Curtis Botanical Magazine, Curtis Flora Londinensis & William Baxter’s British flowering Plants, easily recognizable for their characteristic simplicity of line & elegance.

The condition of these prints is excellent, with soft creamy paper. The shells are all beautifully arranged on the plate and finely hand colored. These prints are mostly found as reproductions & even these fetch $45-$30. All of our prints are authentic antique prints, guaranteed to be the stated age.
