Phyllocactus Gordonianus SMC36 $75
Each print measures approximately 10
inches
by 12 1/2 inches
Bluhende Kakteen or
Iconographia Cactacearum by F. Vaupel, Karl Schumann
& Max Gurke was published in 1900. This very rare work
was issued only once, and contains some of the most
beautiful images of cactus ever seen in all of botanical
illustration.
The beautifully detailed drawings were by
Toni Gurke, the wife of the editor Max Gurke, and are
with hand colouring and gum arabic finishing, very unusual at this late
date. This three-volume work features almost two
hundred flowering cactus species with many from South
America.
Schumann was the curator of the
Berlin Botanical Museum and taught botany at the
University of Berlin. He founded the German Cactus
Society, cataloguing many new species, several of which
bear his name.
Each lithograph is on a soft white paper with no fox marks and measures
approximately 10 by 12 1/2 inches. The
illustrations are as vibrant and fresh as the day
published, and breathtakingly beautiful. The original
descriptive text and a copy of the title page
accompanies each print. It is a rare opportunity to
acquire some of the most glorious cactus prints of all
times, as this work has become exceedingly scarce.
The photos are very accurate, so
please review carefully. All our prints are authentic
antique prints and guaranteed to be from the date
stated.
