“Picturesque Europe: A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Natural Features and the Picturesque and Historical Places of Great Britain and the Continent” is the companion work to Picturesque America.  It, too, contains many beautiful woodcuts & steel engravings by famous American & European artists of the period such as Harry Fenn, Birket Foster, E. George, L. J. Wood, J. D. Woodward, C. Werner, E. Compton, S. Hodson, W. Simpson & P. Skeleton.

The work was completed in the height of the Victorian era, when it was fashionable to travel to many of the locations illustrated to “take the waters” or embark on the “European Tour”.  Sold originally by subscription, in blue wrappers, these romantic views became wildly successful. Today, it is a beautiful snapshot of an idyllic time in Europe, before the devastation of two World Wars that were to follow in the next century.

Much of the history of the countries visited was addressed & it presents a fascinating glimpse of the ancient monuments & history of the countries visited. For those aficionados of Picturesque America, these scenes are equally compelling, nothing more so than Capri, which is magical in its beauty.

Each print is a steel engraving measures approximately 12 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches.
