Yellow Flycatcher BRO31 $245
Each print measures approximately 9 inches wide by 11 1/2 inches long

These beautiful ORIGINAL hand-colored copper engravings are from Peter Brown's New Illustration of Zoology 1776. This work contains 50 colored plates of new, curious, and non descript birds along with a few quadrupeds, reptiles, & insects, with each plate accompanied by descriptive letterpress in English and French. Of these plates, 42 are of birds, including the first published illustration of an Australian bird after Cooks first voyage around the world. This work was intended as a supplement to George Edward's Natural History of Birds.

Peter Brown was of Danish origins and a rather colorful figure who spent time in debtors prison, where he reportedly did his best work. However, his incarceration did not prevent him from being appointed as the Botanical Painter to the Prince of Wales in 1783. He was a proficient natural history & botanical painter, and his illustrations are full of whimsical detail, with birds looking at insects and butterflies in beautifully painted natural surroundings. Ref: Great Bird Books, p82; Dictionary of Bird Artists p.176.

Each print measures approximately 9 inches wide by 11 1/2 inches long. The paper is soft white, strong and chain-linked, some with watermarks. These prints are in superb condition, with very little foxing or imperfections of any kind, and are an astonishing quarter of a millennium old. The colors are very vivid and the palette of this painter is much richer than some of his peers. The composition of each print is a delightful tableau and we consider this rare work to represent the very best of 18th century illustration.
