One Thousand and One Initial Letters Designed and Illuminated by Owen Jones, London 1864.

In this case, the title of the work really says almost all.  Day and Son, Lithographers to Queen Victoria published this work.  There is one unique page for each letter of the alphabet, with between 30-40 variations, all beautifully placed on the page.  The letters are lavishly gilded & painted in blues, rose to red and black.  They are very ornate.  The colors are very fresh and vivid with absolutely no wear on the gilt and the paper heavy quality stock, still strong & bright.  The condition of the plates is good, with some scattered foxing, which we have accepted since these plates have become exceedingly rare.

Each print measures approximately 11 1/4 inches wide by 16 1/2 inches long.  At the foot of each initial is printed “London, Chromolithographed and Published April 1st 1864, by Day & Son Lithrs to the Queen and H.R.H. The Prince of Wales”.  This was Queen Victoria.  The sheen on the gilding was hard to show in the photographs, but it is very pleasing.  There is no fading of the letters of the gilding, so any unevenness is in the photos. These make a truly wonderful and unique gift to celebrate the naming of a child, a marriage, or an anniversary.
