Cels's Hovea MBO40 $35
Each print measures approximately 7 by 9 inches
In 1825, Benjamin Maund started the publication of a
new periodical, The Botanic Garden. His desire, in the
spirit so very true to the era, was to create a work
combining, “accurate scientific instruction with an
occasional appeal to the imagination and to the moral
and religious feelings.” The work is of a precision,
beauty and intense color unrivalled in all of botanical
illustration. The plates are by Mrs E. Bay, Misses E. &
S. Maund, E D Smith & Mills & engraved by S Watts. This
edition is unusual in that it has only one flower on the
page, instead of the usual four, and is bordered by a
delightfully decorative frame. References include Nissen
222; Great Flower Books 1990,p.160; Blount p. 266.
We are currently offering a selection of prints from the
special edition of this work, in the quarto edition
size, measuring approximately 7 by 9 inches. All
plates in this series are ORIGINAL HAND COLORED
engravings and of the utmost delicacy and beauty. Each
flower is a little jewel of skillful artistry. The
condition of the plates is excellent with paper strong
and not brittle and still quite white. The plates are
bright and clean with very fine coloring. It is
remarkable for a work that is almost 200 years old. Each
print is accompanied by the descriptive text. The photos
are very accurate, so please review carefully.
