Patella Shells MAS10 $135
Each print measures approximately 8 ½ inches wide by 11 ½ inches long

We are pleased to offer a selection of original hand colored copper engravings of shells from Friedrich H.W. Martini’s “Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinat”, a work of 10 volumes, printed in Nurnberg 1769-1790. Martini was a Hamburg physician who oversaw the publication of the first three volumes before his death in 1778. The work was continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz, a Danish clergyman. These stunning prints depict many rare & beautiful species, drawn from the finest shell collections of the time, including the museum of the King of Denmark. These are among the finest shell prints ever created, and are now extremely rare.

The condition of the prints is superb, with fresh original color, and paper that is only very slightly creamy & entirely free of fox marks. It is a thick, chain lined paper with strong plate marks & some sheets watermarked. Each print measures approximately 8 ½ inches wide by 11 ½ inches long. Please inspect the photos carefully as they are very accurate.
