Joys of Infancy HP45 $135
Each single print measures approximately
9
inches wide by 11 inches long.
Recently, we have become entranced with
these uncommon and beautiful pouchoir plates which reflect a
time in French Art still inspirational today. Fortunately,
one of our most favorite dealers has found us quite a few
sets. This delightful work purports to be a French
translation of the works of Hippocrates, the Greek father of
modern medicine. It is all tongue in cheek, of course, to
provide the opportunity to create highly decorative and
slightly risqué prints of ancient medical treatments.
Published in four volumes between 1932
and 1934 by Javal et Bourdeaux, the pouchoir prints were
illustrated by the famous Art Deco artist Joseph Kuhn-Regnier.
In total, only 2,335 sets were printed. Ours numbers #2179
and is on a high quality creamy wove paper called Velin de
Marais. Each print measures approximately 9 inches wide by
11 inches long and is in excellent condition with brilliant
coloring so typical of pouchoir prints.
This extravagantly vivid coloring was
created by a process wherein single layers of color were
added by hand to a lithograph using a stencil, in a
precursor of the silk screening technique which is now
widely used for art prints.
