William Henry Harvey (1811-1866) was the artist and engraver of Phycologia Britannica: A History of British Sea-Weeds, published in four folio volumes in London from 1846 to 1851. It was his masterpiece, with 400 hand colored plates, in which he described all known British seaweeds.

Harvey was born at Summerville, near Limerick. He was a giant of the day & perhaps the greatest phycologist in history, attending Trinity College, Dublin. By the time of his death, he was curator of the Trinity College Herbarium, Chair of Botany at Trinity College and Professor of Botany of the Royal Dublin Society. Among his friends were both Hookers (father William Jackson and son Joseph Dalton) and it was through Joseph Dalton Hooker that he received many southern hemisphere seaweed specimens.

This enabled him to write his Neeris Australis (London: 1847-49). He contributed significantly to J. D. Hooker's mammoth work of the Floras of the Erebus and Terror voyage, particularly the Tasmanian volumes. During two years in Australia & Tasmania, he traveled widely, collecting over 10,000 specimens. His reference work, Phycologica Australica, is of such significance that it is still the standard reference on Australian seaweeds today.

We have encountered this work many times, but rarely in the superb folio size from which we now offer a selection of prints, each measuring approximately 9 1/2 inches by 12 1/2 inches. They are beautifully hand colored plates with vivid coloration, in remarkable condition for a work that is over 150 years old. The text accompanies each print, along with a copy of the title page. It is extraordinary to see how important space is in art. The larger paper size enhances the prints immeasurably and one can feel the full impact of the artistry that Harvey put into every single print. The forms of the seaweeds are so elegant & harmonious, with many very contemporary in their design, and superbly decorative in a range of environments from the very traditional to the very modern.
