These beautifully illustrated chromolithographed
prints are from Nests and Eggs of Birds of The United
States by Thomas Gentry, published in
Philadelphia 1882. Gentry was a member of the
Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, and authored
several other books, including Life Histories of
Birds of Eastern Pennsylvania and The House
Sparrow.
The artist of these plates, Edwin Sheppard was
described by Whitman Bennett, author of A Practical
Guide to American Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books
(1949), as the best ornithological artist in America (p.
44).
The condition of the plates is excellent, with high
quality, heavy paper of a lightly creamy color and no
foxing as can be seen by the photos. Each print measures
approximately 9 inches by 11 3/4 inches. The
relevant descriptive text is included whenever possible.
