After graduating from Tama University of Art in 1962 Yoshisuke Funasaka became interested in woodblock printing. A government fellowship allowed him to study in the United Kingdom and the United States for 2 years in the 1970's. He has developed a very distinctive abstract style utilizing different mediums including woodblock printing, silk screen and mixed media techniques. Exhibited extensively in Japan and abroad, his work is held by many museums including the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, Bibliotheque National in Paris, the British Museum in England, the Smithsonian and the Freer Art Museum, Shackler Gallery in the US.
