Each print measures approximately 8 inches by 11 inches

We are pleased to offer a selection of beautiful fruit prints from The Fruit Grower’s Guide by John Wright, published from 1891-1894 with illustrations by Miss May Rivers, Worthington G. Smith and George Shayler. These vivid prints show Miss Rivers' artistry and skill, with an intensity of color and attention to detail that is remarkable. Peaches, apples, cherries, raspberries, pears, grapes, plums, and strawberries are all illustrated.

The work is dedicated to the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers, “In recognition of the activity and influence of an ancient city guild in promoting the extended and better cultivation of fruit in this country.”

John Wright was the editor of the popular London Journal of Horticulture. He remarks cryptically on times when orchards were uprooted to give place to hops (for making beer!) He quotes the medical journals of his time as recommending that "we ought to eat, as a people, ten times more fruit than we do, and it is ten times more delicious than nauseous medicines."

These chromolithographed prints measure approximately 8 inches wide by 11 inches long. The paper of these prints is light creamy in color with no foxing and of marvelous strong, thick stock. There is no accompanying descriptive text, but a copy of the title page accompanies each print.
