We are very pleased to offer a selection of hand colored engravings from R.W. Dickson’s The New Botanic Garden published in London 1806, and featuring illustrations by the famous Sydenham Edwards. This work depicts beautiful & exotic flowers, including iris, calla lily, bird of paradise, passion flower, and water lily, many of which are American flowers.

Sydenham Edwards was the son of a Welsh schoolmaster who attracted the attention of Curtis. He came to London to train with Curtis, and for 27 years most of the drawings in Curtis’ Botanical Magazine were his. He drew the illustrations for this work early on in his career & they have a grace and exuberance characteristic of his early work. Edwards went on to illustrate other publications, including his Botanical Register.

Each print measures approximately 8 inches by 10 1/2 inches and is on a light creamy paper with very occasional foxing. The original hand coloring is still intense and vibrant, truly bringing these flowers to life. Each print comes with a copy of the title page, though there is no descriptive text. It is a rare work indeed, a very small number having been published, so we are extremely fortunate to be able to offer it. All of our prints are original antique prints, guaranteed to be the age stated. These prints are nearly 200 years old.
