Maryland Yellow Throat, American Redstart DOU208 $125
Each print measures approximately 11
inches wide by 9 inches long. Full margins are not shown.
It is with great enthusiasm that we
present the entire set of hand colored lithographs by
Thomas Doughty from The Cabinet of Natural History
and American Rural Sports with illustrations
published in Philadelphia from 1830-1834. This work
is exceedingly rare in its entirety and contains the first series of color sporting prints
published in America.
Thomas Doughty (1793-1856) was born
in Philadelphia and apprenticed as a leather worker in
his youth. Around 1816 he began painting in his spare
time, and in 1830 commenced the publication of The
Cabinet of Natural History with his brother John.
The Cabinet was issued on a monthly subscription
basis, and covered topics such as natural history,
sporting, hunting expeditions, and travelogues. Thomas
left the publication in 1832 and traveled to Boston to
further pursue his career as a painter. He would earn
renown for his topographical paintings, helping to found
the Hudson River School art movement in America.
These are beautiful prints, with a
naïve quality & superb landscapes of an untouched
America that are entrancing. The condition is good,
with toning on many and some defects on a few as noted. The size of each print is
approximately 11 by 9 inches. Descriptive text is
included, along with a copy of the title page.
