The United States Explorations
conducted for the railroads have proved to be some of
the most enduring, not to mention historic & endlessly
entertaining, records of the early days in America.
This particularly fascinating railroad survey was
started in 1853 “to ascertain the most practicable and
economical route for a railroad from the Mississippi
river to the Pacific Ocean” by the Secretary of War,
Jefferson Davis. The survey was led by Lieutenant R. S.
Williamson, with further explorations aided by Isaac
Stevens, the Governor of Washington Territory. Famous
landmarks such as the Rocky Mountains, Missouri River
Falls, the Columbia River, and Mount Rainer are
illustrated in this work, along with many American
Indian tribes.
Each print measures approximately
11 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches, with the large fold-out at
approximately 23 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches. The prints are on
strong paper that is light creamy with minor foxing on
just a few.
