French Fashion Prints, Costumes Parisiens 1912

Robe de serge bleue a volant ecossais by Jan van Brock CP155 $165

Each print measures approximately 5 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches long.

It is delightful to offer these extremely rare prints from the Journal des Dames et des Modes, Costumes Parisiens. These pochoir illustrations were published from 1912-1914, with only 1,279 copies published per issue. The selection offered here is from printing #240, with the title page so marked.

Similar to the Bon Ton Gazette, but even more scarce, it was designed to appeal to the elite of Paris, with high fashion plates and chatty articles on all aspects of life for the privileged, it transcends its mundane goals through the incredible quality of the publication from the high quality paper to the breath taking beauty of the prints and the high quality of the art throughout.

Here in the so called “forgotten years” of the 1910’s we see the art that evokes the whole gamut of that fabulously creative era in France, from the Impressionists and the Fauves to the Cubists, Belle Epoque, Art Nouveau & Deco periods.

The extravagantly vivid colours of the prints were created by the “pouchoir” process, wherein single layers of color were added by hand to a lithograph using a stencil, in a precursor of the silk screening technique which is now widely used for art prints. The best prints in this work are enhanced with genuine gold and silver. Each print measures approximately 5 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches long, with brilliant pochoir colouring. The paper is a soft white, high quality chained lined paper, watermarked Jurnal des Dames, with no deficits. On a few, there is a slim binding stub in the left margin.

Many of the works of the fashion designers of the day were featured. The most notable artists utilized were Brunelleschii, Leon Bakst, J. van Brock, Etienne Drian, Pierre Legrain, Victor Lheur, Armand Vallee, Gerda Wegener, along with many others.
