Edward William Cooke is considered one of the great marine artists of the 19th century.  Panteek is pleased to offer some outstanding examples of his engravings from Sixty-five Plates of Shipping and Craft, a series of etchings published between 1828 and 1831.

Cooke (1811-1831) was born into a family of engravers. His father and uncle were specialists in etching on copper, and the young Edward was surrounded by the works of John Sell Cotman, James Stark and Clarkson Stanfield, works which were engraved by his family. Taking advantage of his love for the sea and sailing vessels, a teenage Edward created plates of ships and boats demonstrating an attention to detail and an infusion of life to his illustrations. 

Cooke later took up painting in oils and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1835 and 1879.  He travelled extensively in France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, Spain, Morocco and Egypt, but a personal favourite was Holland, which he visited eight times between 1837 and 1860. Today, his work is displayed in several museums including Britain’s National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.

The condition of these prints is remarkable for being more than 180 years old. The thick white wove paper holds the plate marks well and shows off the crisp black lines of each engraving. Each print measures approximately 11 3/8" by 8".
