We are delighted to offer these hand colored engravings from the 1845 edition of James Bolton’s Harmonia Ruralis; Or, An Essay Towards a Natural History of British Song Birds: Illustrated with Figures, the Size of Life, of the Birds, Male and Female, in Their Most Natural Attitudes; Their Nests and Eggs, &c.

James Bolton (c1733-1799) was an English painter, illustrator and naturalist who lived around Halifax for his entire life.  He was an avid student of flora and fauna of the field and published a book on ferns and another on fungi before creating what is surely his masterpiece, the Harmonia Ruralis.  The original drawings for this work were on vellum, and two are still in the collection of the Earl of Derby.

References include: Nissen IVB 115; Zimmer p. 64; Wood p. 247; Mengel 310.

As our audience may have discerned, we are avid collectors of nest & eggs prints of every type.  This work is surely the pinnacle of such collecting; perhaps the seminal work of its type.  While some editions of the Harmonia were poorly executed, this one is spectacularly illustrated, finely engraved & superbly hand colored.  Many consider this Bohn edition to be the finest produced.  There are no praises great enough to express the attraction of these beautiful plates!

The condition of the engravings is excellent, with high quality, heavy paper, strong plate marks and no foxing as can be seen by the photos.  The hand colouring is original to the time of issue.   Each print measures approximately 9 1/4 inches by 11 5/8 inches with ample margins. The relevant original descriptive text is included with the bird prints, not with the nests and eggs. Each print includes a copy of the title page. The photos are very accurate, so please review carefully.  All our prints are authentic antique prints and guaranteed to be from the date stated. These prints are about 165 years old.
