After earning a bachelors and masters degree in fine art at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art by 1990, Paul Binnie, a Scot, spent several years in Paris. In 1993 he moved to Japan, immersing himself in Japanese print making & studying with a master printer at Doi, and visiting Toshi Yoshida in his studio. Whilst in Tokyo, he exhibited at the prestigious CWAJ print show at the American Club in Tokyo, where every major Japanese print maker has exhibited since 1955.
Returning to England, he established a workshop in Wimbledon where has created a dazzling and beautiful body of work: woodblock prints, oil paintings, etchings and more in many different genres including landscapes, prints of beautiful women (Bijin), actors (Kabuki) and tattoo prints.
He creates the entire work himself, designing the print, carving the block and printing it. He has exhibited worldwide, with his work held in the Met, the British Museum and more.
In early 2019 He moved to San Diego. On Thursday May 30th, 2019 at USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena the audience will have the great privilege of attending a lecture by this remarkable artist who will share his interest and background in Japanese woodblock prints and what inspired his contemporary interpretations of the art form.
