Wright Vegetable Grower's Guide 1890

While our images are electronically watermarked, the antique prints themselves are not.

Artichoke WRV8 $95
Each print measures approximately 8 1/4 inches by 10 3/4 inches.

These decorative prints of vegetables are from The Vegetable Grower’s Guide by John Wright, published in London, 1890.  It is a little known work, compared to The Fruit Grower’s Guide by the same author, & much harder to find.  The common & uncommon vegetables of the English diet of the 1890’s are all shown, limited as they were.  Even so, many of them, such as asparagus & artichokes, were the province of the upper classes only.  I am reminded of my childhood in early post war England, where there was still food rationing until the 1950’s.  The fare was very plain indeed with big helpings of cabbage & potatoes & very little meat.  It all had such a Dickensian feeling.

England is a country where sweet corn only ripens in a very exceptionally warm year & most tomatoes are ripened in greenhouses, though some improvements have been made of late with early ripening varieties.  During our early years, we saw oranges only at Christmas, wrapped in tissue in our stockings like little presents.  Grapes came from South Africa in boxes, sometimes resting on velvet, again found at Christmas or when one was deathly ill & could not enjoy such an exotic treat.   I have never ceased to be amazed by the abundance & variety of fruits & vegetables in America at prices much more reasonable than in Europe.

These prints measure approximately 8 1/4 inches by 10 3/4 inches. The paper of these prints is soft white with no foxing and of strong stock. We will enclose accompanying descriptive text with each print, which may not always address the specific vegetables, but provides fascinating horticultural news from the 1890s.  A copy of the title page also accompanies each print.
