Jane Webb Loudon (1807-1858) struggled with financial difficulties all her life. Left impoverished by her father, she wrote a novel, The Mummy, Tales for the Twenty Second Century, which became a bestseller. Through it, she met her husband, a botanical illustrator. She decided to write botanical books the ordinary person could understand. Her first, Instructions in Gardening for Ladies, was a great success. She is renowned for her monumental works with lavish plates, including The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Annuals, The Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials, and British Wild Flowers. (References include Nissen 1237; Great Flower Books, 1990, p.115).

These beautifully hand coloured lithographed plates finished with gum arabic measure approximately 8 1/2 inches wide by 10 1/2 inches long. The condition of the plates is excellent.  The paper is strong and not brittle and a light creamy color. The plates are bright and clean with superb, vibrant original hand colouring. Please review the photos carefully as they are very accurate. These plates were highly prized by previous generations, and many were cut up for decorative purposes, so they have become quite a rarity. We have priced them very reasonably and they are a great bargain, as they can be found elsewhere on the web for as much as $600.
