Iris Bulleyana DYK6 $65
Each plate measures approximately 11 1/4 x 17 inches

If you have ever walked in a field of irises as we have, you will understand why this flower was named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. These beautiful and often fragrant flowers are among the most colorful and showy of all flowers and avidly sought by both gardeners and collectors of fine botanical prints.

William Rickatson Dykes was the world's leading authority on irises at the turn of the 20th century. Even though his life was cut short by an automobile accident in 1925, he left a legacy of iris research with his monograph The Genus Iris that was published by the Cambridge University Press in 1913. His classification of iris species with detailed scientific description of each species stands to this day as one of the greatest contributions to the study of these remarkable flowers.

Accompanying Dykes' research and classification in this work are 48 full-color plates taken from the watercolors of Frank Harold Rounds, Dykes' collaborator in this project (Blunt, The Art of Botanical Illustration). So great was Dykes' contribution to the study of irises, that in 1927 the American Iris Society named its highest award The Dykes Memorial Medal for no more than one iris per year of striking beauty and form.

The folio plates we are pleased to offer are from the original 1913 edition, are printed on heavy, semi-glossy stock and are in excellent condition. Each plate measures approximately 11 1/4 x 17 inches, without text, but included is a copy of the title page.
