Each print measures approximately 8 inches wide by 10 1/4 inches long.

We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from this rare and beautiful work of Henry C Andrews (died 1830), The Botanists Repository for New & Rare Plants. This work, published in 1797 was the first serious rival to the Botanical Magazine of Curtis, presenting many new plants & superior publication according to the judgmental Blunt. In total, there were 664 hand colored engravings, all engraved and hand colored by Andrews himself.

Little is known about Andrews, who lived for many years in London, marrying the daughter of John Kennedy a nurseryman who helped write some of the descriptions for this work. Like many of the collectors & publishers of the day, Andrews was a prolific publisher. His works include The Colored Engravings of Heaths in 1802, Roses in 1805 & Geraniums in 1805. The engravings in this work are unique in many ways. The hand coloring, by Andrews himself, is superb, still quite brilliant & of intense hue. The drawings themselves have a very elegant style, which makes his work easily identifiable & extremely pleasing to the eye. In his preface, he states that his intent was to make these prints as close to hand colored drawings as possible & has certainly achieved this objective. The paper is Whatman wove paper, quarto size, many sheets bearing superb 'J Whatman 1794' watermarks. Each print measures approximately 8 inches by 10 1/4 inches and is accompanied by the descriptive text, & a copy of the title page. The condition of these prints is excellent with very little foxing & brilliant color, though we have accepted a little more toning than usual due to the scarcity of the work. All are guaranteed to be authentic antique prints. These Andrews prints are over 200 years old. These prints are very rarely seen for sale.
